Obituary of Evelyn Simmons

SIMMONS, EVELYN JOSEPHINE MCDONALD died peacefully at home in Oxon Hill, MD on October 23, 2010. She died at age 88 of ovarian cancer and enjoyed the comfort of her family in her final weeks. She was the widow of Delford Edgar Simmons (originally of Strasburg, VA) and is survived by her three children, Sally S. Hewett of Burlington, NC, Mark H. Simmons of Warrenton, VA, and Colleen R. Simmons of Waldorf, MD. She is also survived by five grandchildren, April H. Post, Elise N. Hewett, Mark H. Simmons, Jr, M. Christy Simmons, and Bridget M. Simmons, and three great-grandchildren, Ashleigh G. Post, Brooke N. Post, and Cole A. Dutton. Jo was born in Centerville, Iowa September 10, 1922, and moved to Washington DC in 1942. Her Master's Degree was from George Washington University in 1948 and she taught over 30 years in the Washington, DC Public Schools. Jo was active at First Baptist Church of Alexandria, VA. She was an avid gardener, and enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, reading, swimming, and a host of other activities. Internment of cremains will be at St. Stephens Cemetery in Strasburg, VA. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Alexandria Foundation. Arrangements are by Rapp Funeral & Cremation Services of Silver Spring.
