She was the dear wife of the late Granville Lindsey, and beloved mother of Herbert Wilbanks, Claudette (Fred) Merriwether, Cynthia (Woodrow) Gill and Christopher (Zakia) Lindsey. Maria had ten grandchildren: Robin, Lasonia, Daryl, Brooke, Kacey, Brandi, Charlie, Woodie, Marcus and Lailah. She was loved dearly by great-children, and a host of family members and friends. Maria graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, DC. After raising her family, she decided to pursue a career in nursing, finishing the top of her class from Federal City College with an Associate's Degree. Her compassionate spirit, combined with a caring and giving nature, lead her to a calling the Hospice Program at The Washington Home. Maria was a recognized pioneer in the Hospice concept of nursing in the Mid-Atlantic region. In her career, she worked as a clinician with HIV/AIDS positive patients and as an educator teaching various workshops about grief, death and dying. Once Maria retired, she enjoyed a healthy life by dedicating much of herself to helping family and friends but especially to her faith, where her loving spiritual being transcended throughout the church. She was a Deaconess and member of several auxiliaries at Michigan Park Christian Church. Maria was a devoted, consummate mother and homemaker, who enjoyed Sunday dinners with her family. Maria was also a talented seamstress, who enjoyed using her creativity in designing her children's and grandchildren's clothing and costumes for whatever occasion. She was loving, thoughtful and generous and had the ability to make all those around her feel special. Her true beauty came from within her heart. Maria will be deeply missed by her family, and all who knew her. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to: The Alzheimer's Foundation of America at https://alzfdn.org/supportus/donate/
