I just came across this notice of Jon's passage. This is very sad news. I worked with Jon for a couple of years at Literacy Volunteers of America. His knowledge of the field of adult literacy and his commitment to policy advocacy and to that of the adult students was legendary.
Rest well my friend. You were a most faithful steward to the cause.

I just cam across this notice of Jon's passing. This is very sad. I worked with Jon for a couple of years in the late 1990s at Literacy Volunteers of America and was always impressed by his knowledge and commitment to the field and to the empowerment of adult literacy students. The field of adult literacy has lost a most dedicated and effective advocate. This is very heart breaking news.

Jon was a very special guy who knew how to get things done in pursuit of social justice and those in need. He did so with energy, compassion and good humor that is unique today and his loss is a loss for all of us. It was a pleasure to interact with Jon during his time in adult literacy and he leaves a mark that will not be forgotten by all who had the pleasure to work with him and get to know him. I had the privilege to get to know him and am saddened knowing he isn't here with us. ...

So sorry to learn of Jons passing. My heartfelt sympathy to Elaine. Jon touched the lives of countless adult learners, working tirelessly to improve their lives through the gift of literacy. The familiar song lyrics are most fitting here: His candle burned out before his legend ever will. Thank you, Jon. Rest in peace.

Jon was my boss at my internship at Our Voices Matter MD for several months. His dedication to, and passion for, social justice and getting-out-the-vote matters not only inspired me greatly but also taught me so much. From Jon, I learned many skills of social organizing and canvassing, that I know I will continue to use throughout my life. On a personal level, Jon was such a kind light in my life in a stressful time, and I always enjoyed coming to OVM, even after long days at school or work....

Jon was a fierce fighter for social justice and education. He was an active advocate for adult literacy, for those who, because of reading disabilities, were not properly diagnosed or taught to read in American public schools, as well as for immigrants who may have had little opportunity for schooling in their native country. Without knowing Jon, many have had their lives improved because of his efforts on their behalf. Those who did know him had the pleasure of being in the company of a...
