Obituary of Iona Virgil Striner

Mrs. Iona Meredith Striner, an accomplished, elegant lady, passed away of Covid Pneumonia on June 29, 2022 in Silver Spring, Maryland at the age of 92.  Iona was born and reared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She left home for college in Washington, D.C. where she earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Howard University, and became a member of the AKA sorority.

Her career included administrative and organization development work as well as counseling and course development for underserved populations.  She met her beloved husband, the late Dr. Herbert Striner, during her career and they enjoyed a full life together, complementing and supporting each other’s careers, traveling together, and being “best friends” for the 40 plus years they were married until his death in 2015.

Iona was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Winona Moses Meredith, her brother Martin Alfred Meredith, and her devoted nephew, Martin Victor Meredith.

She is survived by her stepdaughter, Deborah Striner Hartten, and her stepson Richard Striner, both of Maryland, her niece Rochelle Lester of Philadelphia, other nieces and nephews, and her best friend from junior high school years, Jean Carr of Philadelphia. 

Iona’s family wishes to acknowledge the comforting messages, prayers and expressions of kindness received.  Heartfelt Thanks to All staff of the Riderwood Memory Care community, especially Iona’s Aides in her unit who lovingly provided her four years of care.

A private interment is being arranged.
