Obituary of Ruth Schluchter Smith

Ruth Schluchter Smith of Gaithersburg and Bethesda Maryland died peacefully on December 24th, 2014. Wife of the late T. Guilford Smith, she is survived by her son, Pemberton Smith, his wife Jean and daughter Emily of Solana Beach, CA. She had a long and distinguished career as a librarian, consultant and author on library and information services in both government and private industry roles, including Chief, Office of Customer Services and Library Liaison for Department of Commerce's National Technical Information Service (NTIS), Springfield, VA (1980 -87) and Manager, Technical Information Services for the Institute for Defense Analyses in Arlington, VA. (1960-1980). A Navy veteran, she was stationed at the Bureau of Ordnance Technical Library, Washington DC (1943-1946) and attained the rank of LTJG in the WAVES. She was active in the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and received the John Cotton Dana award, SLA Fellow Award and SLA Hall of Fame award for her service. She was a founding member of the Church Library Council of Greater Washington and served as first president of the Church and Synagogue Library Association. A memorial service will be held at Kindley Assisted Living at Asbury Methodist Village, 333 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 on Saturday, January 17th at 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions in Ruth's honor may be made to the Asbury Benevolent Care Fund, 201 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg, MD, 20877.
