Obituary of Muriel Frodin English
Muriel Frodin English, a long time resident of Bethesda, Maryland died at home at age 93, after
a period of failing health. An avid reader of literature, The New York Times, The
Washington Post, and The New Yorker, Frodin followed local, national, and international
news-especially politics-with great interest. She was a staunch Democrat, and admirer
of George Orwell, both for his prose and his political insight. She was a graduate of the
University of Chicago, where she met her husband, Dr. Spofford G. English, who died in
1981. Dr. English was one of the many scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project.
He came to Washington from the University of California at Berkeley in 1948 to work
for the newly formed Atomic Energy Commission, served as Assistant General Manager
for Research and Development, and retired in 1976. In the 1960s, Frodin was a reporter
for the Montgomery County Sentinel, and spent many hours researching planning and
zoning issues, while following sessions of the Montgomery County Council. In her later
years, she tutored graduate students in writing at the University of Maryland, and enjoyed
hiking in Maryland parks. She is survived by her three daughters: Susan P. English,
Elizabeth H. English, and Helen W. English, and a granddaughter, Ellen D. Philson. A
small gathering of friends and neighbors is planned for this spring.
