Caroline Hummel

Obituary of Caroline L. Hummel

Caroline Hummel passed away at age 87 on August 11, 2015 from complications due to suspected blood dysplasia. Her health had declined rapidly in the last few months. Caroline was born in Los Angeles, California to parents Jacob and Margaret Ludy. Her dad died when she was two months old. Brought up by her chemistry teacher mother and grandmothers, she was introduced to her husband of 60 years, James, in high school by her mother at an American Chemical Society meeting. Her husband passed in June, 2010, and she missed him terribly for her remaining five years. Caroline attended UCLA and graduated with a BA in chemistry. After her marriage in California, their first child Bob was born in Houston, where Jim was a graduate student at Rice University. Their second child John was born in Palo Alto, where they lived for two years. They then moved cross-country, fulfilling a dream to live on the east coast, where Albert, their third son, was born. Bringing up their children in Maryland, Caroline was active serving on church council and church activities, with charities and volunteer jobs, and University of Maryland campus wives' and gourmet clubs. She and the family lived in London in 1965, in Israel in 1985 and through their travels and activities met and socialized with good friends, famous academics, and even world leaders. Caroline enjoyed participating in Jim's barbershop conventions around the country, attended concerts at the University of Maryland, and supported Jim in his theater groups as a volunteer assistant. Surviving Caroline are her brother Jacob of Evart, Michigan, son Albert of Silver Spring, Maryland, son John of Holly Springs, North Carolina and son Robert of Great Falls, Virginia, grandsons Alexander of Raleigh, North Carolina and Stephen of Charlotte, North Carolina , and granddaughter Lexa of Great Falls, Virginia.
