Obituary of Joseph Robert White

On May 4, 2016, Dr. Joseph Robert White of Washington, D.C. , formerly of Decatur, Georgia, died peacefully at his residence. Joseph Robert White was born to Lewis and Eunice White in Decatur, Georgia on January 6, 1964. "Joe", as his friends called him, went to Decatur City Schools and studied the trumpet, which he frequently played at Official functions. Upon graduation in 1982, Joe was accepted to Georgia State University, where he subsequently earned both a Bachelor's in 1986, graduating "Summa Cum Laude" and later, a Master's Degree in 1989. While working on the Master's, Joe taught undergraduate classes and travelled to Europe to continue research towards his Thesis. Joe continued his education, pursuing a Doctoral Degree from University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in Modern European History in 1991. Joe completed his Dissertation and earned his Doctorate in History in 2000. In 2001, Joe received a Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for his Dissertation "A Content Analysis on Racial Policy and Terror in the Wartime German Press". It had been Joe's dream to return and work at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies and that's exactly what he got. In 2004, he began working as a Research Assistant for the Museum's multi-volume Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos. Joe travelled and lectured extensively for the Museum and taught classes as an Adjunct Professor at American University. Joe was a professional Historian and wrote about Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, and related subjects. He had a broad interest in history, as well as politics, philosophy, and literature and was a lifetime member of the Georgia Association of Historians. Joe was a huge Baseball fan, an avid gardener and loved to cook. He was once told by colleagues that he should start a restaurant blog for Washington, DC. Joe also loved to read science fiction and mystery/crime novels. Joe was a fixture in the Mount Pleasant area of Washington and a regular at Marx Café. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of two years, Suzanne Szado and by both parents. Joe is survived by Charlotte and Tommy Guffey (Aunt and Uncle), Sara (Maggie) White (Aunt), Ruby and Billy Van Metter (Aunt and Uncle), Several cousins, Camrin Emmons White (Former Wife), and a host of friends and co-workers. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 5:15PM at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, 1st Floor Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Internment arraignments are pending.
