Obituary of Kenneth LeRoy Fernandez

Kenneth LeRoy Fernandez, 86, passed away at his home in Bethesda, Maryland on November 10, 2016. Ken was a lifelong Christian Scientist and a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Rockville, MD. He was a graduate of Landon School for Boys in 1949 and received his Bachelor's Degree from Haverford College in 1953. He also served for two years in the Army. Ken retired from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce after a career in government as an economist and international trade negotiator. Most notably, he was a U.S. Negotiator during the "Kennedy Round" at The General Agreement on Trades and Tariffs in Geneva, Switzerland from 1964-1966. Over the years Ken was active in coaching soccer for Montgomery Soccer Inc. (MSI) and participating in Boy Scouts with his sons. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, picnicking, canoeing, and walking his dog. His home away from home, was the family summer house in Brookville, PA, where he, his wife and children would spend their summers. After retirement, Ken loved to travel and collected many artifacts and art work from around the world, including Tibet, Peru, China, Morocco, Norway, and Italy among other places. He was an active member of the community and served for many years at Bethesda Cares, feeding the homeless. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Anne Fernandez, and his parents, Raymond Fernandez and Florence Beer Fernandez. Ken is survived by his children; daughter, Lisa Fisher and her husband, Patrick, son, Glenn Fernandez and his wife Kathi, son, Lawrence Fernandez and his wife Diane; Sisters F. Joyce Fernandez, Phyllis Fernandez, Patty Callahan, and his brother Raymond Fernandez; 9 Grandchildren; Jack Schap, Finn Schap, Dunn Schap, Kelly Schap, Michael Salatto, Madison Fernandez, Austin Fernandez, Dylan Fernandez and Sophia Fernandez and 2 Great-Grandchildren; Mason and Dominic Salatto, along with many other friends and family members. The family will be receiving friends and visitors at 10106 Ashburton Lane on Saturday, December 3rd from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Interment will be in Brookville, PA in the spring of 2017. Memorials can be given to The Diabetes Association in the name of Ken Fernandez.
