Richard Haggis

Obituary of Richard Charles Haggis

Richard Charles Haggis was called Home to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 12, 2023, after a lengthy struggle with cancer. He endured his illness with his ever-present positive attitude and clung to the hope and strength that God provided through his numerous family and friends.

Richard was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on March 15, 1950, to Arthur George Haggis, Jr. and Lewanna Strom Haggis. Being a part of a military family, he frequently moved around spending time in Germany, Wyandotte, MI, Arlington, VA, Kensington, MD and Hollywood, FL. Following high school graduation, Richard did some traveling of his own and ultimately settled in Silver Spring, MD, where he worked as a delivery driver for printing companies in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. It was during this time that he attended a young adult small group at church, and met Nancy Jenkins, the love of his life and best friend. They married on February 9, 1985, and were a devoted couple for over 38 years.

Bicycling was one of Richard’s favorite activities so he convinced Nancy to purchase a bike and join him on rides. Riding together became a favorite pastime on weekends and on vacation. They spent many vacations bicycle touring along the coast of Maine and over the years cherished the many memories of their adventures together.

A strong work ethic was always important to Richard. Over the years, he worked at various jobs, ultimately becoming Shipping & Receiving Manager with a contractor for Capital One Bank at their computer refresh center. Richard & Nancy cherished time together at their home in West Laurel, MD, where they enjoyed a simple lifestyle. Exercise and a healthy diet were always a priority. Working outdoors was another favorite pastime for Richard as he maintained the yard, shrubs and trees, so the birds and wildlife could enjoy their surroundings as much as he did. His gentle, kind demeanor and subtle humor will be missed by all those who knew him.

Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy, his brother Doug Haggis and wife Diane, and his sisters Lyn Kramer and Pam Fontenot. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lewanna Haggis, and his brother, Art.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023, 2:00 p.m. at Oakdale Church, 3425 Emory Church Road, Olney, MD 20832, www.oakdale.church . In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard’s memory may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.
