To the Poling Family: Our deepest condolences over the untimely passing of Charlie. Our family is shattered. Everyone knew the jovial good-natured Charlie but he was so much more. He was kind and generous and would give the shirt of his back to help his loved ones and total strangers, he loved talking about medicine and likened himself to a doctor (lol) and always trying to diagnose his self and others. He liked things very clean and orderly and he was known to be a bit of a germophobic. He was a very hard worker and was always the most liked employee on the job by his colleagues and customers. Charlie was very smart and talented and he valued friendship and loyalty. He made an effort to stay in touch with people. He retained childhood friends thru life and worked with them, traveled with them, went on hunting and fishing excursions and he loved to camp out. Charlie liked the good things in life and had high class taste. Charlie loved nature and being outside. He loved to walk and hike and be at one with nature. Charlie would be solving a rubik's cube in two minutes than would want to show off his culinary skills. He had quite a creative streak and would want to be a barber and than he would build beautiful things with his own hands. He was a jack of all trades and could build or fix anything. I think what I want people to know the most is that Charlie would make everyone smile with his stories that almost seemed too fantastical to be true but were true.. Charlie would quietly go about his business helping others like driving senior citizens and shut ins to the grocery store and carrying their groceries in. He befriended everyone he met and was generous of his time and resources throughout his life. He loved animals and kids and loved his family and lifelong friends. My only solace is that he is at peace and will be reunited with his beloved Dad and Grandfather. Charlie you enriched our lives and rest in peace! Your memories will live on in our hearts.

Janet Ernst for John Ernst posted a condolence

To the Poling Family - Condolences and message from John Ernst. As I reflect back on my memories and friendship with Charlie, I can honestly say that Charlie was my best friend and a brother to me. We met in Junior High in Kemp Mill and we were like instant twin flames. Charlie and I shared so many adventures together from camping, fishing, shooting pool, hunting, going to the gun range, and taking so many excursions to the beach and the mountains together and with friends. Charlie loved the outdoors and he loved anything that involved good food, music, festivals and celebrations. I can't count how many concerts we went to from the Scorpions, Kix, Dora, Metallica and everthing from A to Z. People gravitated towards Charlie because of his natural charisma and good-natured personality. Charlie was smart and funny and he could entertain you for hours about his stories of being in the military in Germany and growing up an Army brat. We gravitated towards each other because our Dad's both served distinguished careers in the military and met our mom's abroad. (Charlie's mom is German and my mom is Japanese). We shared so many similarities but like brothers, we could fight but Charlie never held a grudge and would always go back to his happy go lucky self. We worked four jobs together spanning over 40 years together. We were like the band of brothers...Charlie was very good mechanically and he could fix anything. He taught me so many skilled trades like Masonry and construction. Always a patient teacher. Where I am introverted, Charlie was extroverted. My mom said we complemented each other's strengths. Charlie, you were always fearless. I thought we would grow old together. I should of realized it was not in your destiny to grow old. You were like a cat with nine lives. To us, you were always invincible and larger than life. I am glad I was able to assist you this past year. Nothing could pull you down. Charlie, I will miss you man but I had a dream and you came to me and said," John don't be sad, I am in a good place." I finally feel a sense of peace and know you are in a better place and you always have my back. I hope Ricky and Taro were wagging their tails to greet you and you are with your beloved Dad and Grandad. I know you are smiling down on us with my Dad by your side saying it was a great run! You were one in a million and I will always love you Brother! Till we reunite....

For Charlie, we will always love you and remember your infectious smile and infamous stories. You were larger than life with a heart of gold. I will reflect on all the concerts we all enjoyed together. Thanks for getting me hooked on the Scorpions and so many other awesome bands. The first concert I ever went to was Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult with you and my brother and Lori. . Everytime I see chopsticks, I will think of you drumming and all trips to Hammerjacks and other concert venues.. Charlie was not only a friend, he was a brother to me. He was at all of our big family events like the funeral of my Father holding us all together and making us smile. This picture was from my College graduation at St. Mary's College. Charlie was always there to lend a hand, whether you were moving, needed your dogs walked, needed a ride, had a flat tire. Charlie was always there and so giving of his self. I don't really remember the time before Charlie came into our life and I will never forget the time he blessed us with his companionship. We were the lucky ones to know someone who loved life so much and who brought a smile to everyone he met. It didn't matter if was a lifetime friend, a total stranger, a customer - Charlie liked to help people and feel needed and we needed you Charlie..Thank you for all the wonderful memories. I am so glad our family got to reconnect with you post Covid.
Thank you for all you did for our family and for others. Until we see you again in heaven, please watch over us; be our Guardian Angel and say Hi to my Dad for me. I know your Dad and Grandad are welcoming you with open arms. Gone but never forgotten. You will be missed!

To the Poling Family - My mom, Yoko Ernst is devastated over the unexpected passing of Charlie. She asked me to share a few things with your family. First and foremost, my mom told my brother that Charlie was her favorite person. One of the last things he did is very telling. My mom was sick around New Year's this year and Charlie had sent two dozen long stemmed roses to her and wished her well. He also bought her dog, Gigi, a nice fleece blanket for Christmas and told my brother to take good care of my mom. This was Charlie, always thinking of others. Charlie was like a son to my mom. He was there helping her care for my Dad when he was sick and my brother was working. He was there providing support during my Dad's funeral. My Dad always said Charlie reminded him of his brother also named Charlie. When my mom had a stroke in her early 60's, he would take her to therapy, Walter Reed, Fort Meade [cataract surgery] and would drive my mom to commissary and px. He never refused a request from my mom. She would make him japanese pickled cucumbers and he loved it because it reminded him of German pickled cucumbers. He was the handyman for my mom and could fix anything from my mom's cable or anything she needed fix. He was very good mechanically and if he didn't know how to fix it, he would figure it out. My mom saw his true heart, humor, kindness and love of children and animals. He was also very patient and very good with elderly people. Charlie, thank you from my mom for all you did for her and her family. Everything reminds us of you from the Japanese pickels, your love of music and travel, the Polish store and everything in between. Rest Charlie, you have earned your wings.
