I met Andy at Syracuse University and would occasionally connect with him when I visited Washington DC and when he visited San Francisco. I still remember him wearing waders as a fashion statement (in college, that is). I appreciated his perspective on things, and I'm sure we would have been more steady friends had I lived in the DC area. I can still picture his Jack Nicholson mannerisms. It's sad and shocking to read about his death.

I'm anxious to talk to anybody who knew Andy in the later part of his life, and who is familiar with his circumstances.

I went through OCS and Navy Supply Corps School with Andy and we became friends. I was a fan of his intellect and his wit.
I lost touch with him after I got off active duty but I never forgot him. I Googled him last week on a whim, and I was shocked to read his obit. The world will be a little dimmer without Andy.
I don't have any more words....

As many people on this page have already mentioned, my favorite part of knowing Andy was the great conversations we had. I loved our little debates that were dynamic, insightful, fun, and, above all, respectful that spilled out after class into the hallway or a coffee outing. On my first day of the first class of the program, Andy was the first student I met since we were paired for the introductory, get-to-know-you activity. In just those first few moments, he made me laugh and made me feel...

I am saddened by this tragic news. I had the chance to work with Andy on a project in one of GMU classes and I remember how very sharp and insightful he was. He was a very nice guy and had a gentle soul.

It is with deepest sadness that I offer my heart felt thoughts to the family and friends of Andy. I was very close to Andy for many years, but as the way of things, we drifted apart. I sorely miss his amazing wit and humor. The world is a little darker without his presence, but there is a powerful angel now watching over, protecting what he cared about, and shining a light into places that others may not have looked. You are very much missed my friend.

I have hanging in my cubicle a picture Andy took of concrete geese. I pointed it out to him as a possible "Where Is It?" photo for the Maryland Gazette. It isn't merely captioned "Concrete Geese" but Andy went to the trouble to ask the man who made them about his business. Andy gave me the print and signed it as he packed up his things after getting laid off with the other 28 Capital and Maryland Gazette employees. We are the same age, and he was a witty curmudgeon with a...

Andy and I took many classes together at GMU. He was kind, thoughtful, and sincere; he stood out among all of us with such passion and curiosity. I'm grateful for the conversations that we had, and incredibly sad to hear this news.
