Andrew Carruthers

Obituary of Andrew Rice Carruthers

Born at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington DC, August 2, 1964. Andrew grew up on Long Island, attending public schools in Port Washington, NY. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in political science from Syracuse University. After completing his undergraduate degree he held a number of positions; as an officer in the Navy, with the federal government, and as a photojournalist for the Maryland Capital Gazette. Most recently, he returned to school at George Mason University and received an MA in Criminology in 2014. Andrew was a long-time resident of Greenbelt MD where he was active in many volunteer organizations including the Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE), and the Greenbelt Museum. He was a frequent contributor to the Greenbelt News Review and was founder and moderator of the Greenbelt Listserve. He took great pride in sharing his sharp wit both through personal correspondence with friends and family, as well as more publicly through his community engagement and writing that ranged from light-hearted humor to unapologetic polemics. He will be remembered for these things and for being a very good friend to many. Andrew is survived by his parents, Richard and Karen Carruthers of Albuquerque, NM, his brothers Jay of Saratoga Springs, NY and Geoff of London, England and their wives and children. Other family members are aunts and uncles Enid and Larry Hodes of Takoma Park, MD, Gail Holzrichter of West Hartford, CT., and Robert and Jeri Carruthers of Louisville, CO. and their children and grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 5PM Wed., March 23 at the Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Church, 3215 Powder Mill Road, Adelphi, MD 20783.
