Well, we knew this time would come as it does for all of us but another one of the Greatest Generation members has passed and not many more are left to honor. That he served in WWII is a master piece of understatement given the stories he relayed to me. Frank had incredible experiences during WWII and he flew in both the B-17 and the giant B29 serving in different gun positions and East and West war zones. WE cannot imagine the bravery that Frank and his fellow airmen had to face. He said you did not want to make friends with anyone! Cuz they were likely not going to be around in the next month or two. you had to fly 25 missions over Germany and then you were set free. The movie Memphis Belle is well worth watching because it told the story of how one B-17 made 25 missions and then volunteered for just one more when the Capt. learned that the next flight of B17s over deep Germany were going to be short of aircraft to ensure the mission was carried out. Imagine, Frank at such a young age and an Aeronautical engineer age 22-ish flying in a B 17 manning a 50 cal machine gun aiming at German planes intent on shooting you and the plane down! He described the bright flashes of lights on the German wing edges and said of course you had to realize quickly that the pilot was aiming right at you and you had to return the fire and hope to hit him first or dissuade him to move on. Frank had a great sense of humor and he could dance well in front of my band. We always enjoyed being with Frank and to bad there are not more men in America like Frank. So sorry to see him go...........
